SLUGABED in vancouver

Join us Friday, November 2 for Ninja Tune recording artist Slugabed. With Michael Red, Max Ulis and ScottyDJ.

Blending influences both classic and contemporary, from the outermost reaches of dubstep, hip hop and beyond, Slugabed has received unanimous praise for his first Ninja Tune releases since signing to the label last year, and there is much anticipation for his forthcoming debut album.

Under his Slugabed alias, 23 year-old Greg Feldwick creates music which is at once complex, deep, thoughtful and above all distinctive. It channels the energy of the best of todays bass music, through spacey bleeps and meditative melodies to explore the outermost reaches of electronic music making today.

Originally hailing from Bath, UK, Feldwick relocated to Brighton in 2008, where he played an instrumental role in the success of local club night Donky Pitch for which he still holds a residency. The first rumblings of appreciation from his peers came at this time, from Slugabed’s initial pool of 12-inches. Releases for the Ramp Recordings and Stuff Records labels were the first introduction for many to his work, with both records demonstrating his ability to combine intelligent and original production skills with undeniable dance floor appeal. Strong club and radio support followed from a wide range of respected DJs including Mary Anne Hobbs, Mark Pritchard, Benji B, Laurent Garnier and Surgeon as well as Tom Ravenscroft and Huw Stevens on BBC Radio 1. With an already impressive catalogue of official remixes for the likes of Starkey, Eprom and Kelpe under his belt, he also created his own unofficial version of Pharoah Monch’s classic ‘Simon Says’ whic h devastated dancefloors worldwide. However, it was his ‘Ultra Heat Treated’ EP, released in 2009 on the prestigious Planet Mu label, that propelled Slugabed furthest into the spotlight, winning him new support and glowing reviews across the board, as well as interest from some of the best cutting-edge record labels around.

Deadbeat is one Scott Monteith, a long time Montrealer and recent Berlin ex-pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000, for labels such as Cynosure, Scape, and Wagon Repair to name but a few. His work has been met with consistent critical acclaim from the industry's leading publications and websites, and drawn regular performance invitations for some of the world's most respected festivals, including Barcelona's Sonar, Berlin's Transmediale, and Montreal's own Mutek. From 1999 to late 2003, Scott worked, assuming various roles, for the Montreal based company Applied Acoustics Systems, makers of a range of critically acclaimed software synthesizers. Having now moved on to pursue his own musical efforts full time, the experience left him with a passion for the development of new creative interfaces, and a strong grasp of some the most cutting edge technology in the industry. A certified music technology junkie, his knowledge in such matters has been occasionally called upon at various events, most notably the 2007 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne, Australia, and as a writer for Computer Music Magazine. Whether crafting kaleidoscopic house and techno, snap-clap digital dancehall, or impossibly heavy dub, Scott continues to search for his own unique voice between the ones and zeros.

sun araw @ the waldorf

Sun Araw - Tuesday March 27 @ The Waldorf

Cameron Stallones began his musical career as a founding member of the experimental psychedelic rock collective Magic Lantern. Soon after, demos originally intended to light the Lantern became the first Sun Araw LP: The Phynx. Sun Araw blossomed as a solo project, walking the mind-planes from psychedelic drone to melted afrobeat, from warped dub to minimal composition. Structural and spiritual inspiration for Sun Araw comes primarily from Cameron’s first artistic love: film and filmmakers, especially those invested in the long-take. Devoted to long-form mantric music, the ethos is similar: straight lampin’ in deep focus, angle after angle on the melodic object, gaining strength from the subsequent breakdown of the illusion of fixed perspective.

SEPALCURE (Hot Flush)

"Straightforward descriptions of Sepalcure-- a finely manicured mix of dubstep, house, UK funky, and footwork-- make it sound pedestrian, even contrived. The reality is anything but.." Pitchfork Media
Sepalcure's combination of love for bass and 90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Machinedrum and Praveen. Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics.

MACHINEDRUM (Berlin)

Pitchfork Media - Machinedrum : "Now You Know"
"..a relatively fresh musical formula .... with some of the most memorable moments in the (admittedly brief) history of [IDM]."
"..the standard to which the next wave of imitators aspires."
Rating - 9.0/10
His latest full-length, Room(s), was named second best album of the year by readers in online music site Resident Advisor's 2011 Best Album poll.
